Text to Binary Translator

Convert text to binary code and back. Each character becomes one or more groups of 8 bits (bytes) using UTF-8, the encoding computers use for text on the web, so letters, accents and even emoji all work.

To decode, paste groups of 0s and 1s separated by spaces, or one long run of bits: it’s split into bytes of 8 automatically.

Type or paste in either box: it translates both ways.

Questions

What is “hello” in binary?

01101000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111. Each letter is one byte, and a capital letter differs from its lowercase letter by a single bit: H is 01001000 and h is 01101000.

Why do some characters take more than 8 bits?

UTF-8 uses one byte for English letters and digits, two for most accented letters (é is 11000011 10101001), three for most other scripts and four for emoji.

Is this the same as ASCII?

For English letters, digits and basic punctuation, UTF-8 gives exactly the same bytes as ASCII. UTF-8 extends ASCII to cover every language and emoji.
